Nichula Gewog Profile
Nichula is one of the remote Gewog under Dagana Dzongkhag with population of around 1118. Due to its geographical distance from the Dzongkhag it has been under the administration of Lhamoizingkha Drungkhag. The Gewog is sprawled across an area of 138.97 square kilometres. The Gewog follows Indo-Bhutan international border in the south, Senge Gewog under Sarpang Dzongkhag in the east, Pelrithang Gewog under Tsirang Dzongkhag in the north-east, Tshendagang in the north and to the west flanked by Sunkosh River (Puna Tshangchu). The Gewog is nestled at an altitude of 140-1200meters above the sea level. It experiences hot humid summer and cool winter. It is also one of the least populated Gewogs with 158 households of which around 49 are out of ground. The entire Gewog is electrified and has farm road connected by suspension bridges.
The primary source of residents’ livelihood is agriculture and rearing livestock. The Gewog has very large fertile farm land where paddy and maize is cultivated extensively. Other major cereal crops include millet. The locals also grow varieties of vegetables such as potatoes, spinach, radish, chillies etc. The main cash crops are areca nuts and ginger. Cattles, goats and poultry are main livestock reared by the local communities. A few of the households are also involved in small trade and businesses.
In absence of a Motorable Bridge over the Sunkosh River even the Gewog Center is still not connected with road to the nearest township. Due to this all the developmental activities are severely hampered. The farm road will be frequently washed away by the swollen seasonal streams during the monsoon season. All villages are deprived of many facilities and have one of the highest poverty in the country. A 220 meters span suspension bridge over the Sunkosh River constructed in 2011 is the lifeline of the Gewog’s people. Before 2011, people used to cross this river by boat; crossing Sunkosh River (union of Phochu and Mochu) was not a piece of cake. The construction of Hordung Suspension Bridge brought happiness and opportunities of luxurious life.
The Gewog has its new Gewog Administration office constructed in June 2016 at Dangreebu which is at the center of the Gewog. And other infrastructures such as Community Center, RNR Center, Gewog Farm Shop and a Park Range office are also established. The Gewog has one Out Reach Clinic (ORC) and one Extended Class Room (ECR). The construction of Bailey bridge at Nichula will immensely benefit the community.
Since the Gewog is located inside the core zone of Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary, the human wildlife conflicts are very acute. The wild animals such as elephants, deer, wild boars, rabbit and rodents are major pest for the crops. The problem has been slightly answered with the installations of electric fencing by the Gewog Administration with technical support from PWS. However, the electric fencings are not able to chase the wild elephants and to protect crops from this pest is one of the major challenges facing by the villagers. The concerned stakeholders are in the process of finding suitable and doable solutions for the issue.
